“Fox Fridays” at Sweetangel.com: Great Gifts for a Great Cause

Posted by on Saturday, 31 December, 2011

In September, James V. Mangini III of Hanahan, South Carolina, launched Sweet Angel™ (www.sweetangelgifts.com), an online gift shop with a twist: Up to half of every purchase benefits a charity of the buyer’s choice. James, whose father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s several years ago, especially wanted his company to give back to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Every Friday, use the code “Fox Fridays” for a 10 percent discount — and 100 percent of the profits will be donated to the Foundation!

The site has raised more than $600 for Team Fox so far, and James hopes to keep generating more funds and awareness. “The mission of your Foundation is to go out of business,” he says, “and I’m in business to help you get there.”

Team Fox Members Take Their Mission to South America!

Posted by on Thursday, 22 December, 2011

When Oliver and Terry Holler were asked to go on a promotional tour in Argentina, they agreed–with the condition that they be allowed to continue their ongoing fundraising for Team Fox.

In August, the Hollers were involved in a national campaign for electronics chain, Garbarino with their DeLorean Time Machine and actor Christopher Lloyd. The ‘Back to the Future’ themed commercials were such a success, the Hollers were invited back to the country to embark on a three month tour with their unique automobile.

“We saw an opportunity to spread awareness of the foundation in a part of the world that might not have been reached yet,” says Oliver. Terry continues, “Pesos can also finance research, and we didn’t want to abandon an important part of our current lifestyle just because we were going outside of the U.S. for an extended time.”

The Hollers have aligned themselves with Sergio Saluzzi, Meli Godoy and other Argentine citizens who share an interest in Team Fox and, like the Hollers, are fans of ‘Back to the Future’. “Everything we do, we do it with enthusiasm,” says Sergio. Meli adds, “We’re happy to help.” Their invaluable support includes help with translations, custom designed graphics, videos, as well as daily updates to their Argentine website to craft a clear and effective message for a Spanish speaking audience.

The Hollers journey is taking them through eleven provinces across the country and they are distributing over 70,000 pieces of literature along the way. An 8 minute bi-lingual video repeats the Team Fox mission statement along with Parkinson PSA’s and other captivating video.

For photos and daily information about their ‘time travels’, visit the Holler’s website ToTheFuture.org and ‘like’ the same on Facebook.

Climbing for a Cure

Posted by on Tuesday, 20 December, 2011

Team Fox member Kerry Twibell will have a pretty unconventional Christmas and New Year’s this holiday season. She is flying to Tanzania with seven friends to embark on a six day hike to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro—all the while raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease. What’s her motivation? The constantly upbeat and positive attitude of her mother, Catherine Twibell, who was diagnosed with PD in 2004.

Kerry and her mother, Catherine.

One might assume that Kerry is an experienced climber—summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro is no small feat. However, she’s never even climbed before! Instead, she spontaneously agreed to join her friends when they invited her this past November. They will be accompanied by a team of guides, cooks and porters.

For the last month, Kerry has been mentally and physically preparing for the 35-mile hike in tremendously high altitude. She and her team will embark on Tuesday, December 27 and finish on New Year’s Day.

Kerry explained: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to take on one of my biggest personal challenges for something even bigger—raising money to find a cure for Parkinson’s.” Kerry set a goal of $10,000 and so far she’s already raised more than $9,000!

Please join us in wishing her good luck on this incredible adventure.

An Art Community Preserved by Parkinson’s Research

Posted by on Tuesday, 20 December, 2011

In the MJFF Winter 2011 newsletter, we profiled one couple who stepped up for Team Fox–raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s research while preserving an important art auction.

Carol Hagan at the Inaugural Quick Finish Auction

February 2009 marked a life-changing event for Pat Hagan and his wife, Carol. The symptoms he had been experiencing for the previous six months were finally given a name: Parkinson’s disease (PD). At 57 years old, Pat had many unanswered questions: “What does this mean? What will my future look like? What can I do now?” he recalls wondering.

Pat and Carol were eager to learn more about the disease and how to cope. They found The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s Web site (www.michaeljfox.org), which soon became their “home base for research and updates on PD.” That’s also where they first learned about Team Fox and were inspired to help raise funds for Parkinson’s research.
